Studio Barca

Set in the wonderful backdrop of Barcelona, Spain and all across Europe I was privileged to study there for a semester.  A program geared to expand your mind in not only design and architecture, but in experience and culture as well.  While this semester was greatly dedicated to experience I also found time to complete a project to design a market in the heart of Barcelona.

Inspiration by Travel

I wanted to start this off with a collection of some of my best photos taken over the semester.  The wonders of Europe and Spain itself fascinated me and inspired my design process and direction.

Process and Development

I began the semester long project by learning to approach design from any angle.  Here we as a class were assigned to 'map' our site in an unconventional manner.  My partner and I chose to digitally analyze our site to study the geometries and spaces created through digital eyes.  Through intense study we came up with a method of extracting control points of the site geometries and the spaces created by them.

One Giant Roof and Some Plants

Is what my partner and I chose to call our project.  It relates to the intriguing relationship my partner, a landscape architecture student, and I, an architecture student, developed working on this project.  We ended up with the development of a hanging plant market.  In a very digitally poetic manner, we were able to create a pleasant landscape slowing you from the hectic city.  Wile engaging the other ends of the site you are eventually led to the hanging market where the greenery not only engages the below, but also the above. This market was positioned to engage the 'hot spots' of activity on our site with this market and encourage visitors to participate in design.
