Urban Furniture

This project became the first time I went through the design process in depth.  As a studio we were tasked with finding a problem area on campus and redesigning the ergonomics and personal interaction people have with the site.  Working through the project I realized that gaining a wide array of information before embarking on proper design decisions became paramount to proceeding through this project.  As I progressed I began working through the research phase, then modeling through ideation and ending up at a final design.

Research and Ideation

Here I began at the basics.  I chose to redesign a bus stop that I frequently use while here at college.  Taking this problem I wanted to  start with learning how people interact with architecture and with what senses?  I broke down the methods in which people tend to touch, see, and smell architecture and branched my ideas off of that research.  This process brought a blend of nature to architecture, created a sense of place at this bus stop, and delight the visual senses.

Model Ideas

From the research I began to develop an idea of flow through the site.  With the site being linear I started to play with the best way to expand space along a road.  This lead to a blend of design and nature.  This blend allowed people to experience the intricate relationship architecture can create with nature.  Adding in the human element to experience that relationship requires attention to the senses.  To visually help this process I developed an idea of architectural flow into nature.  To best show this I created models that visually describe the flow through the site.  This process also allowed me experience using 3d printers helping me learn a new method of recording my thoughts.

Final Progress

Finally I wrapped all that I learned into one presentation.  The presentation was a detailed presentation of my thought process from research, design ideas, and final design.  Here I condensed what I learned to the basics of what I learned.
